First English Translation. 12 plates & folding map (complete). 220 pages, 8 x 5 , 8vo. In fair condition. Full leather boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine rubbed; front hinge split, rear hinge beginning to crack at head. Title label exhibits some soiling, but gilt lettering and ruling are overall bright and clean. Previous ownership signature, in ink, found on top edge of front paste-down. Front gutter split at title page. Map of Greenland was previously torn & repaired using white thread and a needle. Light off-setting to map & leaves adjacent to plates. Light toning, mostly at edges of leaves. Binding intact. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Hans Poulsen Egede (1686 1758) was a Dano-Norwegian Lutheran missionary who launched mission efforts to Greenland, which led him to be styled the Apostle of Greenland. He established a successful mission among the Inuit and is credited with revitalizing Dano-Norwegian interest in the island after contact had been broken for about 300 years. He founded Greenland's capital Godthåb, now known as Nuuk. First English translation of: Det gamle Grønlands nye perlustration, eller Naturel-historie, og beskrivelse over det gamle Grønlands situation, luft, temperament og bestaffenhed, first printed in an enlarged edition Copenhagen, 1741, but which first appeared in a pirated edition in Copenhagen, 1729.
