Worlidge, Painter, Printed by Dryden Leach, for M. Worlidge, London, 1768, frontispiece portrait of the Worlidge, with 180 plates, extra plate of Medusa, another extra plate of Hercules strangling the Lion, 182 in all, 48 pp of text, bound in full leather, 11.25 x 9 , 4to. The plate impressions measure 2.25 x 3 to 3 x 4.25 . In fair condition. Both boards detached. Spine quite worn and plain in appearance. An excellent candidate for restoration, if desired. Numerous scuff marks, scratches and abrasions to surface of leather boards. Gilt tooling rubbed, remaining pigment is bright. Dentelles remain bright, slightly chipped with loss. Fresh end papers. Internally good with light toning at edges. Some light instances of fingersoiling in the margins. All edges marbled, albeit faded. Binding remains intact. Good despite binding. Minimal instances of foxing. Some neat pencil marks in the margins of the plates from previous booksellers. Please see photos. Thomas Worlidge (1700-1766) was a portrait painter and etcher whose last major project, his Select Collection of Drawings from Curious Antique Gems was published in a collected form in 1768 after the artist s death. A beautiful Neo-Classical book of portrait engravings of busts, faces, and mythological figures in action, each printed in the center of the leaf. The details of the etchings are quite remarkable. The subjects include Plato, Socrates, Ptolemy, Hannibal, Homer, Nero, Sappho, all of the main gods and beasts such as lions, bulls, centaurs. Supposedly our copy is circa 1780 even though dated 1768.
