1781 Memoires of Duke of Sully France Henry IV Huguenot Utopian Europe IRISH ed A very valuable memoire of the history of the reign of Henry IV Maximlien de Bethune was a 16th-century French statesman who was the first Duke of Sully. Most known for his service under Henry IV of France, Sully left a collection of memoirs which is now a valuable and important work on the history of France during the reign of Henry the Great. Even though Memoires contains many fictitious stories, it is still recognized for its accuracy and portrayal of European royalty. The most controversial section of Memoires is Sully s vision of a utopian society designed for all of Europe. He envisioned a Christian republic that was governed by a Very Christian Council in which all differences were resolved and a military was complete removed. Some scholars even claim that Sully s plan helped establish what would become the current European Union. According to Tulard, this work is a very valuable memoire of the history of the reign of Henry IV. This highly rare Irish edition was translated into English by Charlotte Lennox. According to the ESTC, this edition is a very free adaptation of Pierre Mathurin de l Ecluse des Loges, translated by Charlotte Lennox.
