Dust jacket is chipped at head and tail of spine; loss at head of front flap's hinge. Water dampness staining visible on rear cover of dust jacket. Flap hinges worn on dust jacket; toning to creases, but decorated front cover still presentable. Yellow cloth boards scuffed at edges and worn at corners. Head and tail of cloth spine bumped. Painted lettering dulled, but still legible. General soiling and scuffing to cloth covered boards. Gutter of title page exhibits water or tea dampness stain. Normal toning throughout text-block, especially around edges of leaves. Binding intact. Please see photos. Carolyn Wells (1862-1942) was an American mystery author. Wells wrote a total 170 books in her career; during the first ten years she focused on poetry, humor, & children's books. Later, she would fall in love with the detective story after reading That Affair Next Door by Anna Katharine Green. Among the most famous of her mystery novels were the Fleming Stone Detective Stories, of which there are about 60 titles. Horror House is one of Wells's lesser known Fleming Stone novels.
