Dos Passos was one of the great American novelists of the post-World War I "lost generation," whose reputation as a social historian and as a radical critic of the quality of American life rests primarily on his trilogy, of which this is the first volume. Brilliantly original (Alfred Kazan) Described by Malcolm Cowley as the most impressive and possibly best American work in the naturalistic tradition. It influenced generations of writers, including Norman Mailer, who hailed it as the single greatest novel any of us have written, yes, in this country in the last one hundred years. Critic Edmund Wilson called the book by far the most remarkable, the most encouraging American novel since World War I. The story of a young country at the dawn of the twentieth century. Slowly, in stories artfully spliced together, the lives and fortunes of five characters unfold. Dos Passos uses a fresh, multimedia style that mixes newsreels, song lyrics, biographies of major figures, semi-autobiographical prose poems, and standard narrative. This collage effect, as well as the accompanying social satire, shakes the literary establishment, hence the importance of this book and its early edition.
