Volumes covering the final 4 years of the American Revolution. All four volumes are First Editions, all part of the same original set with identical bindings, full polished calf with spine labels lettered in gilt, some spine labels with chips or lacking [see photos], all bindings square and tight with some rubs to edges and corners, lacking any library or other ownership marks. These volumes contain important documents related to the American Revolution, often first appearances in British publication of these letters, treaties and other documents, and commentary with a British perspective on the war. Vol. XXIII [1780] paginated vii, 1-192, *193-234*, 193-404, [2], 1-251, [11]; contains early notices of Capt. Cook's death and return of his ships Resolution and Discovery to the British Isles, correspondence concerning Maj. Andre and Benedict Arnold, and progress of the war; Vol. XXIV [1781] paginated [iv], 1-160, *161-202*, [2], 161-339, 1-207, [10]; contains extensive commentary on the progress of the war in America and conflict in the West Indies; Vol. XXV [1782] paginated iv, 1-192, *193-244*, 193-324, 1-215, [12]; includes analysis of "alarming and dangerous situation of the British empire in India", and further comments on the progress of the American war; also contains pp. 321-324 full text of the proposed Treaty of Peace between the United States and Britain; Vol. XXVI [1783] paginated iv, 1-367, 1-223, [13]; contains early English-language accounts of the pioneering balloon ascents made by Montgolfier and others, further military operations in India, and publication of the various peace treaties ending conflicts in America [signed at Versailles] and on the continent.
