Details of life among the people and the indigenous Indians in Southern Chile during the mid-nineteenth century. Quoting the preface: "In the year 1849 the United States government authorized an Expedition, under the command of Lieutenant James M. Gilliss of the Navy, for the purpose of making astronomical and other observations in Chili. Deeming the opportunity an unusually favorable one for visiting a country somewhat removed from the ordinary route of tourists, I made application to the Secretary of the Navy, and received an appointment as a member of the expedition. On arriving in Chili a permanent observatory was established at Santiago, the capital. It is not my object to treat of the natue of our observations, to give a scientific description of the country, or even to introduce the reader to the refined and agreeable society which gave a charm to our long residence at the seat of government. . . at the end of three years, when the Expedition was ordered home. . . I tendered my resignation, and set out on a tour through the central and southern portions of Chili. . . no apology will be expected for the publication of any information in regard to a tibe of Indians who are but little known and rarely visited, though they have won for themselves an enviable reputation, by successfully resisting the encroachments of the white man for more than three hundred years. My object has been to give such an account of the manners, customs, religion, and present condition of the Araucanians as may be interesting both to the student of ethnology and to the general reader."
