Aspects of Islamic Civilization is a series of documents which illustrate the development of Islamic civilization, texts translated from the languages in which they were originally composed by famous protagonists of that culture. The author's intention is to present a panorama of Muslim life and thought and achievement as depicted from within. The translations, all by Professor Arberry, were picked to throw light on the literary, intellectual, and religious movements within Islam, as well as to illuminate something of the politics and the sociology, ranging from the origins in the sixth century down to the present day. The author has culled innumerable manuscripts to choose passages from the most highly esteemed and authoritative works in order to give a complete picture of Islamic culture. This study of the Islamic Civilization, past and present, is particularily germane today in light of the many countries newly freed from colonial rule whose peoples comprise some 400 million Muslims. From Morocco to Indonesia, from Turkey to Sudan, there is a shared belief and a pride in a common inheritance and a desire to recapture a civilization which once dominated the world. Professor Arberry has managed to convey with skill and artistry the flavor of a civilization once again in the ascent. The graceful lyrics of a love poem or a bit of folk wisdom are both brought to life under the deft pen of the author. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 11241901
