The first edition of this uncommon, beautifully illustrated work regarding the foundation of the Church and its founding figures. With forty illustrations after paintings once held at the Benedictine Abbey of Liessies. The original paintings were either destroyed or sold during the French Revolution. Forty plates total, including engraved title page. All except two plates are portraits of important religious figures such as John the Baptist, the Virgin, Saint Benedict, Saint Waltrude, and Ignatius of Loyola. A selection of biographies regarding the principal founders of the Church. Written by Etienne Binet, a Jesuit author based in France. Collated, complete. In French. With two bookplates. The first bookplate is that of Michael Jaffé CBE (1923-1997), English art historian and director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The second bookplate belonged to Mary Barbara Hales Hales inherited the family seat of Hales Place, Woodchurch, Kent, following the extinction of the Hales baronetcy circa 1836, and later converted it to a Benedictine nunnery. With notations by a prior owner on the author of this work to the verso of front endpaper. Errata to the final leaf. With the signatures A-2P4, all illustrations are included in register and pagination. In a contemporary calf binding. Rebacked with the original boards preserved. Light rubbing to the boards. Two bookplates to the front pastedown, Mary Barbara Hales and Michael Jaffe. Prior owner's shelf number to the front pastedown, K3 No.12. Prior owner's inscriptions regarding the author, in Latin and French to the verso of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Chips to the head of first few leaves. Fore margin of first plate, the illustrated title page, renewed with small section of image restored. Small loss to the outer margin of the 'S Elias Propheta' portrait. Offsetting to 2C3v from the plate 2C4, 2D3v from 2D4, 2F2v from 2F3, 2H1v from, 2H2. Small wormholes from page 253-end, heavier to the bottom margin of Pp2 to end. Very Good Indeed.
