Beschreibung
1st Edition hardcover in rust paper covered boards with bumped (not rubbed) spine ends, tips still fairly sharp. Negligible specks of soil on boards. 160 pp. Foxing on endpps but text clear. Crossed out name on fep. Professionally reproduced dj in new mylar with a chip at head of backstrip has taken half of the title, with micro chips at tips, light age-toning on white portion of white/brown illustrated dj but still displays well. In many ways this is a remarkable book, not only for the 267 exquisite drawings it contains but also because the research required in tracing the development of equine equipment was exhaustive. This leads the reader down many interesting paths; the evolution of roads and transport, warfare, communication between one country and another, court fashion, sport, travel, trade, religion and superstition, all have played their part in molding the horse as we know it today and its accoutrements. The age at which man first began to tame the horse and equip it with some kind of primitive saddle is unknown, but there is a small equestrian figure in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY, showing reins leading from the rider's hands to the horse's mouth, and traces of what may well be harness. The figure is Egyptian and dates from 2000-1800 BC. We've selected four images for you to view that are very early, medieval age implements, however, the volume continues up until the modern age showing racing saddles and gear, along with some western tack, spurs, etc., as well.
