A scarce work on birds observed around Osborne Royal Naval College on the Isle of Wight in the early part of the 20th century. It was written by A.M.C. Nicholl with the aim of interesting cadets at the college in local bird life. inscription at the front of the book reads "N.D. Watts-Russell - 1916 - R.N. College Osborne". This may be Neville David Watts-Russell (1901-1962) who became a commander in the Royal Navy, but I have been unable to verify this. Beige cloth boards with a photograph on the front and gilt titles on the front and spine. Contains black and white photographs, some printed and some tipped in. Boards are very heavily rubbed and soiled; corners are bumped and there are tears at the head and tail of the spine; several scratches on rear. Internally, the book is in much better condition. Pencil price mark on front pastedown; neatly inscribed name of previous owner on front free endpaper; light foxing to many pages, mainly around margins, but text is clear.
