This is the novel 'The Adventures of Harry Richmond' by George Meredith bound up from the original serializations published in the 'Cornhill Magazine'. Including extraneous material this volume amounts to 604 pages, plus 14 plates by George Du Maurier most of which still have original tissue guards, and some vignette chapter initials also by Du Maurier. Bound by Joseph Knox, Aberdeen, in a functional plain terracotta coloured cloth, title lettered gilt on spine, with faded paper labels at base. With a signature in pen on front free endpaper of Wm. Booth, dated 1881. References to the Cornhill Magazine and issue dates have been pasted over with this strips of plain paper throughout. "The Adventures of Harry Richmond" was first published in the Cornhill Magazine between September 1870 and November 1871, after which it was issued in a three volume format by Smith Elder & Co., with a possible second edition or issue in the following year. Although it is possible that parsimony was the reason for this amateurish piece of book making, a more likely explanation is that the novel was unavailable for most of the 1870's and well into the 1880's until a revised edition was issued 1886.
