Beschreibung
The first edition of this extremely scarce travel work, complete with four plates and a fold out map. The first edition. Collated complete with four monochrome plates and one fold out map depicting The Great Andaman and Adjacent Islands. The plate 'Andaman Islanders and Implements' has been incorrectly bound at page 307 rather than 315. Very scarce. Frederick John Mouat was a British surgeon and chemist, noted for his work regarding prison reform. Whilst undertaking the role of Inspector-General of jails in lower Bengal, he began to campaign for the use of prison labor as a means of reform and as a way to increase prison efficiency. Following the India Mutiny in 1857, Mouat began to investigate the use of the Andaman Islands (an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal) as a possible penal colony. His experiences during the exploration he undertook to The Andaman Islands between 1857 and 1858 are meticulously documented in this work and include details regarding the establishment of Port Blair, They also discuss the taking of an islander (known as John Andaman) with the aim of improving relations with the Andaman natives. The work is a fascinating original source material detailing the history of penal reform and exploration in the nineteenth century. In a green cloth binding with blind stamp detail. Externally generally smart with slight bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Professional repair to the joints, extremities and head and tail of the spine. A few light marks to the boards.Booksellers label to front pastedown. Slight offsetting to endpapers. Internally generally firmly bound although strained in places. Pages generally bright and clean with the odd spot and marginal age toning. Loss to the head of the frontispiece, not affecting the engraving itself. Folding map is smart with evidence of professional repair to the rear of the map. The odd spot to the map. Good. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 619K15
