Quarterbound in black leather and patterned paper with gilt stamped spine and speckled page edges. Large 11 1/2" X 8" pages. Contains numerous illustration, including full page (some in color) plates with tissue guards. Bound with the Volume XXIII index at front. The January through October issues contain the complete serialization of H. Rider Haggard's "Allan Quatermain; or, A Frowning City. This was Haggard's first sequel to King Solomon's Mines. Complete and earliest known US publication of Allan Quatermain beginning January 1887 through October 1887. W. Jennings Demorest, the publisher, noted that this serialization proceeded the manuscript's publication in book form. Contains passages not included in book form. This pre-dates both the USA known pirated editions and the Longmans, Green 1st UK version of June 1887. A VG binding with sun fading to spine and parts of covers, else Fine.
