Marbled edges and endpapers. Alexander Slidell, he had adopted the name MacKenzie in honor of his grandfather, was a U.S. Navy officer, best known for his order to execute mutineers abroad the USS Somers in 1942. One of the mutineers executed was Philip Spencer, the son of the Secretary of War John C. Spencer. He was also an accomplished author using several extended leaves from the navy to travel in Europe. At the outset of his travels to England he felt a certain animosity towards that country which changed while traveling there: "Hence, the patriotism which made Amercia dear to him prompted him to love England: for, after all, we are only different editions of the same work." Binding with light wear along edges, front board starting. Library plate on inside front cover, another on verso of title page. Bookplate of previous owner on inside back cover.
