First edition, containing "Biographies of the President of the United States, the Vice-President, the Heads of Departments, and Senators of the Forty-Third Congress." ---- William Horatio Barnes's commemorative volume included biographical sketches of eighty-one government leaders (president, vice president, cabinet and Senate members), accompanied by handsome steel-engraved portraits. Like his previous works on the Supreme Court and Reconstruction Congress and Ulysses S. Grant (1872 campaign pamphlet), Barnes asserted that "The American Government" contained accurate and authentic information ----- In "The American Government," Barnes meant to set the record straight regarding those who traduced their elected officials. He classified detractors into bad, envious, and ignorant categories. The bad possessed no innate virtues, but seemed to attribute vices to their superiors as license for themselves. The envious desired to supplant those whom they maligned. The ignorant credulously accepted as gospel truth the aspersions of the bad and the envious. Barnes's categories also applied to select government officials, several of whom served in Grant's cabinet. Despite Barnes's best efforts at predicting human behavior, subsequent revelations revealed that he occasionally proved an erroneous judge of character. A handsome copy of a significant work.
