The first edition of this poem by Scottish dramatist David Mallet. An uncommon work, complete with half-titles. The author of this work is not stated to the title page, although this work is commonly attributed and is known to have been written by David Mallet. ESTC no. T21858. Foxon, M44. Collated, complete. David Mallet was a Scottish dramatist, who was friends with famed contemporary figures such as Alexander Pope and James Thomson. He is best known for his 'William and Margaret' which was adapted from a traditional ballad. This poem was largely popular at its time of publication with very positive contemporary reviews. In a half calf binding. Rebound. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. A few light patches of rubbing to the boards. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, A J K P Pigott. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age toned. Juvenile pencil inscriptions and drawings to the verso of front endpaper, verso of title page and to page 91. Occasional ink underlining and strokes to the margin in a more contemporary hand. Contemporary inscription to the title page, 'Thos:' Offsetting to endpapers.
