A smart, first edition copy of this comprehensive history of the Ice Age and Palaeolithic times. Written by W.J. Sollas, a British geologist and anthropologist. After studying at the City of London School, the Royal College of Chemistry and the Royal School of Mines he matriculated to St. John's College, Cambridge. After some time spent as a University Extension lecturer he became lecturer in Geology and Zoology at University College, Bristol in 1879, where he stayed until he was offered the post of Professor of Geology at Trinity College, Dublin. In 1897 he was offered the post of Professor of Geology at the University of Oxford, which he accepted. This particular work was first introduced as a set of lectures delivered to the Royal Institution in 1906. It is concerning pre-historic societies, archaeology, the Ice Age, and Palaeolithic times. Also including 235 illustrations, as well as a folding plate to the frontispiece, complete. In the publisher's original blue cloth. Externally, smart with some fading to the cloth and bumping to head and tail of spine and extremities. Spine has sunned slightly. A few marks to the boards. Internally, front and rear hinge is slightly tender but remaining firm. Book is generally firmly bound. Front and rear pastedowns and free-endpapers are slightly age-toned. Pages bright and clean.
