This tragedy describes the events of the final days of the titular hero from Greek myth, Ajax, son of Telamon. After the Greeks win the Trojan War, they get into a dispute with each other over who is to receive the coveted prize of Achilles' armor. As a result of a disagreement with the leaders of the Greek forces, Ajax falls into a fit of madness due to perceived injustice. While in his rage, Ajax attacks and kills a group of sheep, believing them to be his enemies. When he discovers his mistake, Ajax is horrified and vows to kill himself. The ensuing play follows Ajax's last day on Earth and explores themes of honor, the nature of heroism and anger, and the inevitability of fate. As one of the oldest surviving Greek tragedies, this play offers invaluable insight into the culture and philosophical thought of one of the Western world's oldest and most influential civilizations.
