Famous memoirs by Bolivian writer and politician José Aguirre Achá, who took part in the Acre War, a series of border conflicts between Bolivia and Brazil, which developed mostly along the Amazon rivers and its tributaries. The conflict was carried out in the period 1899-1903, during which the territory of Acre, rich in rubber trees and gold deposits, was disputed. The Treaty of Petrópolis concluded the conflict: Brazil annexed the Acre territory over which Bolivia claimed sovereignty in exchange of a monetary payment, while Bolivia annexed a large portion of Brazilian territory between the Abunâ and Madeira rivers. This war is also often called Rubber War, since the main reason why Brazil mobilised the army was the tax on rubber export.
