Bound in original publishers blue gilt cloth, full gilt edges. Cloth light rubbed on edges, 2 corners light knocked, a few minor abrasion marks. Generally bindings in very good clean firm conition.Dust jackets rubbed, worn with loss. Jackets in good condition. Internally, gathering in ( i,e small section of pages ) slightly protruding in volume 2, but pages still holding firm. Pages and illustrations in very good clean condition throughout. Three uniformly and sumptuosly bound volumes, in decoratively embossed navy blue buckram, all page-block edges gilt, 306pp, 299pp, and 409pp, all text leaves printed on thick paper with numerous illustrations in text, plus full page plates on even thicker paper, colour plates hand tipped-on to thin card backing and each with printed tissue guards, folding maps and plates (including large folding map in pocket at rear of volume 2), bibliography and index at rear of volume 3. Collated complete with all parts present. One of 550 signed copies. Complete with the original black printed, thick brown crepe paper dust jackets. These books were hugely expensive to make and originally cost 5 Guineas (approximately 800 pounds in today's money) CONDITION: An unusually well preserved FINE very clean and tight unmarked set (slight foxing to end-papers, purple backing sheets for the tipped-in colour plates slightly faded at edges) with VERY GOOD and very clean dust jackets (edge-chipped and partly torn but neatly repaired and otherwise all look very presentable in their removable transparent protectors).
