First Edition. The lasting impact of this work on anthropology and the social sciences at large cannot be understated enough. With this book, Levi-Strauss almost singlehandedly revolutionized anthropological study by pioneering the "structuralist" discipline. He did this by arguing that structures exist across all cultures, and that it is this pervasive commonality that renders each culture equal to the other. This emphasis on a horizontal ordering of culture completely reset a discipline which could not let go of a vertical ordering - one that placed Europe at the top. Here, Levi-Strauss's method treats social behavior as a phenomenon akin to a language. In the same way we use language to make meaningful statements without consciously referencing grammar, we are able to behave in a sensible way without consciously referencing structures. Like grammar, social structures operate as the invisible boundaries that allow coherence and meaning to emerge. Going beyond this point, Levi-Strauss asserts that cultures can only exist insofar as there is a deep structure embedded within it, and that anthropological study should focus on the interaction of the structure with cultural behavior, not just on the behavior itself.This is a manner of study still practiced to this day.
