Hill 160.Keate's account of the wreck of the Antelope, just off the coast of the previously unexplored Palau Islands (in the Pacific Ocean). The stranded crew was cordially received by the local inhabitants, and the chief even sent his son Lee Boo over to England on the return journey. Sadly, Boo died of smallpox after five months of attracting much attention in England. Keate compiled this account from the journals of Capt. Volume 2 with a dampstain to the top margin throughout (affecting text and plates).Biography: George Keate (1729-1797) was an English poet and author. He was educated by Rev. Richard Wooddeson of Kingston upon Thames. Although he studied law, was called to the bar and was appointed Master of the Bench of his Inn of Court, he never actually practised law. He was a poet, naturalist, antiquary and artist, and was one of the founding members of the Society of Artists. He left the Society to become a member of the Royal Academy in 1768. He was later made Fellow of the Royal Society.
