Failing.ALS on Hospital Ship letterhead, Quarantine, New York, dated July 1869: "Card of Thanks: We the undersigned officers of the USS Saratoga deem it our duty to return our thanks publicly to Doctor Charles C. Buckley (375 East 111 Street, New York) also to Doctor John McCartney, surgeon on the Hospital Ship Illinois for their skilfull care and untiring attention to us during our late sickness. That terrible disease Yellow Fever has swept away forever seven of our brothers officers, we shall never see their familiar faces again in this world, but hope to meet them in heaven. May they rest in peace. Thanking God for our recovery, we will alaways remember that after him, him we owe our present good health to the skill and attention of the two gentlemen mentioned above.
