London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1919. First British Edition. Inscribed by Conrad "To Mr & Mrs. Ralphs, Christmas 1919," though without signature, on front free endpaper. Signed, typed verification letter from CUNY Conrad scholar Dr. Frederick R. Karl laid in. Octavo; x, 336pp. Publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering. Black topstain. Spine chipped at head with a ~2" split to cloth along lower rear joint and general darkening to surface. Boards edgeworn, with a decent bump at bottom front corner and some light fading to surface. Free endpapers foxed and a bit toned from laid-in paper. Pages a bit toned, with discreet marginal checks and a few brackets in pencil throughout. Binding is holding soundly. Letter dated May 8, 1974 from Frederick R. Karl, Editor of The Collected Letters of Joseph Conrad, on his City College of The City University of New York Department of English letterhead to his CUNY colleague Gerald Graze reads "Dear Mr. Graze: I have examined the inscription in your copy of Joseph Conrad's The Arrow of Gold and find that it is in the handwriting of Joseph Conrad. Sincerely Yours, Frederick R. Karl." Two additional photocopies of said letter and a handwritten entry from Thomas Wise's Conrad bibliography also laid in. WISE 41.
