Four volumes, all First editions, published 1950, 1951, 1953 & 1961. Octavos, pp xiv, 346; xvi,342; xvi, 287; xii, 297. All volumes bound in green buckram and with unclipped dust jackets. Illustrated with maps and gravure printed photographs. Coast of Incense has a neat previous owner's name and date to the ffep, otherwise all volumes are clean and unmarked internally; there is a little restoration to the bottom of the jacket spine of Traveller's Prelude. These are in printed jackets, none of which are price clipped. Jackets of volumes I and III are worn, chipped and marked, the other two much less so. The first volume has two newspaper clippings pasted into its endpapers: a brief profile and picture of Stark at the front, and a review of a bibliography of W. P. Ker to the rear (Ker was Stark's adopted godfather, introduced her to climbing, and she was with him when he died on a climb in northern Italy in 1923, as detailed in that volume). Otherwise they are all internally clean, pages uncut. Black and white illustrations and maps on coloured paper. Wide-ranging autobiography that details Stark's early life in Italy before her travels through the Middle East and Afghanistan, including her role as a propagandist in Yemen and Egypt in World War II. Contents clean, discreet owner name to 'Incense', jackets are bright and fresh showing minor wear to extremities. A fine set. Alongside Gertrude Bell, Stark remains one of the best known female travellers in the Middle East, becoming one of the first westerners to cross the southern Arabian Desert.
