Two paper tags near head of spine (a bit frayed), both white, one with blue border, serrated edges and an old ink manuscript "4190" at center superimposed on part of the other. There are references to Brazil and to the Brazilian and Portuguese constitutions.Ferreira Borges (1786-1838), a leading liberal economist, political and legal thinker, received his law degree from Coimbra and quickly established a reputation as a barrister specializing in commercial law. In addition to being the author of the Codigo commercial portuguez, enacted in 1833 and in force until 1888, he wrote many other works on commercial law as well as poetry, essays, and even the first Portuguese work on forensic medicine. He also played a leading role in the 1820 revolution, and was nominated Secretary of the Interior of the provisional government under Freire de Andrade, was a deputy to the constitutional Côrtes of 1821, as well as having been a partisan of the liberal cause during the civil wars between the liberals and conservatives and their aftermath from 1828 to 1834.*** Canto, Ensaio bibliographico . 1828-34 (1892), 414.
