M. D C. C. XL. (1740) at title page. First or early printing. Smooth dark brown leather boards, gilt spine titles, gilt squares with emblems between five raised bands, moderate shelf, corner wear, chip. Leaves generally very good. Seven pages (14 with both sides) found, including title page, are partially clipped neatly in center area; unsure of reason. Swirling marble-like earthen blue, red and yellow endpapers. Bind good, square. Rare near good first edition of what appears to be an early Christian daily devotional for each day (30) of the month. Title page continued: "et traduits d'un manuscrit latin qui a pour titre: Christianae philosophiae medulla, opus asceticum" or, "and translated from a Latin manuscript entitled: Christian Innermost Philosophy, Spiritual Works." In 1741, Jacques-Ignace, chevalier de la Touche-Loisy published: "Les étrennes du temps & le saint usage que les chrétiens en doivent faire" or, "The gifts of time and the holy use that Christians must make of them." Touche-Loisy (1694-1781) was a French painter of miniatures and portraits. He was born at Châlons-sur-Marne. The beautifully executed canons for the altar of the church of Notre-Dame at Châlons are almost the only examples of his work which have not disappeared. The Chevalier de La Touche-Loisy, who was also a poet, died at Châlons. 344 pages. Insured post. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 021711
