Advance Trial Binding and Printing. This advance copy is dated September 1905, pre-dating the first US and British editions, likely a unique copy! The copyright page states, "Published, September, 1905", whereas the first US edition reads, "Published, October, 1905". (Both the first British and US editions were published Oct. 6, 1905.) There are numerous other differences as well. The copyright page of this advance binding is punctuated differently than the first US edition; it also adds a rule below the author's name, and does not have the "All rights reserved." paragraph. The publisher's name on the spine is smaller; the height of the text block is 1/16 inch less; the frontis illustration is different (same as facing page 104in the first edition); there are three out-of-place additional illustrations (the first edition has a total of eight illustrations); page 9-11 are paginated whereas in the first edition they are not, and the page that lists illustrations is omitted. Also, this trial binding repeats the first two chapters; pages 21-36 throughout most of the book except for two short sections at the end that include pages 25-36 followed by pages 31-32. Red cloth - lettered and decorated in gilt on spine and cover with black ruled border on cover. Tissue guarded frontispiece and three additional illustrations by Maurice Greiffenhagen.
