Light ink checkmarks next to a few of the businesses, with some light wear to the covers; otherwise very good. Scarce. The directory's editor, Lennie Anderson, wrote in the foreword: "We believe that this directory, the first of its kind published in the East Bay, will make our buying public more aware of minority entrepreneurs who find it very difficult to place their products and services before an unknowingly demanding public, also adding a stability to our economy." More than 1,000 black-owned and operated businesses are listed in the directory, which covers Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, Alameda, and San Leandro. There are also multiple pages listing religious and social organizations. A form at the back of the booklet allowed business owners to be added to subsequent directories. In this example, a few businesses not listed have been handwritten in. Advertising in the directory ranged from contractors and grocers to liquor stores, churches, and real estate brokers. According to news reports, this first-of-its-kind directory was sponsored by the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Club East Bay Club. The information in the directory was assembled by members of the club and issued in a loose-leaf directory that was a forerunner to this booklet.
