8vo. x, 1-207[2]p. Color frontispiece plus 5 other full-page color illustrations and color decorated endpapers by Mahlon Blaine. Bibliography Yellow, black and red patterned paper half bound in black cloth with gilt letters on the spine. Some wear to extremities with a couple of corners just barely rubbed through, lower corner of front cover very lightly bumped, spine gilt mostly dulled, covers lightly soiled, previous owner's name in ink on front pastedown, all illustrations present and in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. John W. Vandercook (1902-1963) was a British-born writer and radio commentator with special expertise on the West Indies. He authored 14 novels and several screenplays. While a young newspaperman out West, Vandercook witnessed the lynching of a Negro, and that awoke his interest in the whole Negro problem. He has been to every Negro republic on the fact of the globe. He spent many months in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, studying psychological and political conditions, and gathering materiaL for this biography of the Black Emperor--Henry Christophe--whose story he has told so vividly in BLACK MAJESTY. His first book was entitled TOM-TOM. Mahlon Blaine (d.1969) was a prolific illustrator of children?s books and mainstream magazines and literature, especially during the late 1920s, and is also remembered today for his darkly erotic work.
