CONTENTS DESCRIPTION: The 47th Illinois Infantry was organized at Peoria, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on August 16, 1861. The unit was transferred to St. Louis, Missouri and remained on barracks duty until December of that year. The 47th Illinois Volunteers lost 30 killed and 100 wounded in the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, in October 1862. The unit also suffered heavy casualties in a May 22, 1863, charge during the initial phase of the Siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Following reorganization, the unit saw duty in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Mississippi. The regiment was finally mustered out of service on January 21, 1866. Scarce unit history with an excellent unit roster of members from organization to muster-out. Scarce original edition of this Illinois regimental history; likely privately printed in small numbers and not often offered for sale. The only references RareBookHub has is from Ernest Wessen catalogs, Midland Notes, in the mid-1960's. Live Auctioneers does not have any reference to this work. REFERENCES: DORN Ill #201; NEVINS 1, 65: "More a personal narrative than a unit history; the author appears to have spent more time traveling than fighting, and his view of the war was too broad to give volume lasting value." COULTER #58: "The 47th Illinois Regiment, of which Bryner was a member, confined its operations almost entirely to the widespread Mississippi Valley. This narrative is strictly factual without much imagination or incidental comment. The larger picture of the war crowds out much that an observant traveler would have included.". Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 0122017
