Hardcover. Zustand: Very good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: good. First Edition. Octavo, 615pp., illustrated, with drawings by Marta Becket. A very good copy in the publisher's red cloth, with scuffing to the base of the spine, else rather nice. In a good dust jacket with some chips and tears. A fantastic copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Balanchine on the front free endpaper to one of his friends and colleagues in a contemporary hand: "To Marion Patton, thanks for great help from G. Balanchine." Balanchine's pen was running out of ink when he signed his name, but the signature is entirely legible. Below the inscription is another inscription in the hand of Francis Mason: "A million thanks + much affection to the best Editor a first book EVER had, + in appreciation for one of her great productions. Francis Mason." Balanchine thanks Patton specifically at the end of his Preface, writing: "Marion Patton's suggestions, patience, and understanding have been invaluable." Mason was a widely respected ballet critic. Though our efforts to learn more about Patton and the role she played in helping to produce this book were not fruitful, it's clear from Mason's generous inscription that she was a pivotal figure. With Balanchine, Mason, Jacques Fray, and Marta Becket all contributing elements to the book, one guesses that Patton might have been the "cat-wrangler." The book is scarce signed by Balanchine. An appealing association copy. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 12257
