2 single sided Hemisphere maps as frontispieces + illustrated Title page + xii (inc plain Title page) + 1211 pages (last page is 1209, but 2 pages have used same numbers) + 14 single sided un-numbered maps (one folding). Full-Leather binding in fair condition, some leather loss, spine readable, leather worn through at front edge, 5 raised bands but string holding well. Contents in fair/good condition, most pages good and tight, some corner folds, one owner name, one owner initials, front endpage detached, some minor ageing of paper, a couple of minor stains, the odd minor faults (nothing major except the folding map has loss to base and a few edge tears), other single single sided maps in good condition. There are 2 hemisphere maps at front, the old world & the new world (America north & South , part of Asia, New Zealand) not precise at all due to date and knowledge of the time, the other single sided maps are Africa, South America, North America, Asia including New Holland (basic outline of Australia), Denmark, England Wales & part of Scotland, Europe (fold-out), Germany includes Holland Austria Poland Hungary down to Venice, Hindoostan (India), Ireland, Italy, Russia in Europe, Scotland & Spain. Preface states maps correct to end of 1813. Text starts with a free enquiry into the origin and antiquity of letters by Abbot Anselm, also a short essay on the origin and antiquity of the English tongue, before going into the Dictionary and then gazetteer. As could not find a copy by Cumming that we could confirm was exactly the same, BL states date as c1815 but does not list pages/maps, so cannot confirm complete, though found another with less pages and only 14 maps. First published around 1774, it went through various editions/publishers with some different content and various number of maps, by various map makers. So to conclude this is an undated edition by Alexander Cumming but believe to be about 1815 in overall good condition, with 16 maps 15 good, 1 with base loss/tears, binding fair.
