Drawn and Quarterly. Montreal. 2010. 144 pages. Wraps. First English translation edition, first printing with full numberline 10-1. Book is fine. Considered the preeminent graphic novel and one of the first ever examples of Gekiga. Created in 1956, author/artist Yoshihiro Tatsumi's affinity for Mickey Spillane and hard-boiled crime novels of the 1940's inspired Tatsumi to create Black Blizzard. In the 1950s, mainstream Japanese comics (manga) came out of Tokyo and was aimed at children, led by the work of Osamu Tezuka. But prior to Tezuka's residency in Tokyo, he lived in Osaka and mentored a young Yoshihiro Tatsumi, who would later go on to create an entirely new genre; and further coin the term "gekiga" in 1957. Gekiga was quickly adopted as an exciting, new Japanese art form that catered to an unrepresented group of Japanese artists and cartoonists who longed for their art NOT to be known by the more common term "manga", meaning "whimsical pictures" as their art was much more serious; and intended for adults. Black Blizzard is considered the preeminent graphic novel of this then newly created genre. This is Tatsumi's first full-length graphic novel; first published in 1956; and now published in English for the first time. First English language edition, first printing with full numberline 10-1. Fine. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 002454
