Beschreibung
1920. First edition. 191pp. and a folding map. Leland Buxton (1884-1967) was a brother of Edward Noel-Buxton (1869?1948), a co-founder of the London-based Balkan Committee, an organization established in 1903 to influence English policy in the Balkans. In 1903, the Balkan Committee organized a mission, in which Buxton very likely took part, to aid the Bulgarians of Macedonia in redressing the grievances they had suffered at the hands of the Turks. The Spectator magazine wrote of this book in 1920: "We are in no way surprised, therefore, to find Mr. Buxton entering a plea for the Bulgars, who of all our enemies had the least excuse to offer for declaring war and who showed quite as much barbarity as their German paymasters. Mr. Buxton urges alternatively that the Bulger black sheep are grey, or that, if they are black, they are no blacker than their neighbours. He detests the Greeks, and goes so far as to suggest that Salonika should be taken from them and given to the Serbs, by way of adding fuel to the flame of racial ill-will in the Balkans. When Mr. Buxton says that the Bulger is little known here he is misinformed. No Balkan people had such persistent advertising agents here before the war as the Bulgars, and none enjoyed greater sympathy from 1877 onwards". The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine and front board. The book is in excellent condition with light bumping to the bottom of the spine and bottom front corner. The contents are tight and clean with a bookplate on the front fixed endpaper.
