SYNOPSIS: Blundering into Disaster is a work of major importance, a book that could have been written only by Robert McNamara. As Secretary of Defense during the Johnson and Kennedy administrations, McNamara stood closer to the nuclear precipice than any man now living. His analysis and his impassioned warning demand our attention. McNamara argues that our present position is one that we never intended to reach, that was never planned, that has never been thoroughly discussed and decided upon. Drawing on his years of experience at the heart of Washington policymaking, McNamara shows how close we have come to nuclear disaster. He argues that the thousands of nuclear warheads deployed by both sides present terrible risks without providing us with a usable defense. A defense based on conventional armaments, he submits, offers far greater safety without the risks of nuclear annihilation. Impassioned in tone, the text represents a clear and credible analysis of the dangers that we have unwittingly created, and a realistic alternative to present policy. McNamara's analysis will be widely debated. It should raise serious doubts about unthinking commitment to our current policies. Robert McNamara came into prominence as president of Ford Motor Company. After working as Secretary of Defense, he became president of the World Bank from 1968 to 1981. He currently serves as Director on a number of corporate boards and is affiliated with nonprofit organizations concerned with the issues of nuclear arms, population and development, world hunger, and East-West relations.
