UNCOMMON FIRST EDITION - IN AN ATTRACTIVE AND CLEAN QUARTER LEATHER BINDING : [ Preface dated 1868 ] - Tightly bound, one page to the rear index, professionally restored. Excellent copy, with numerous chess board illustrations. EXTRACT FROM - Western Daily Press, February 1st 1869 : ' Written by G. H. Selkirk who was for many years connected with the Bristol press and published by Messrs Houlston and Wright, will be very welcome in circles where the noble game of Chess is appreciated. The writers of books relating to chess and other games generally err in one of two ways - they assume that all their readers are learners, and consequently are entirely ignorant of the game, or they assume a certain amount of knowledge and write so that learners cannot understand them. Mr Selkirk has endeavoured to meet the requirements of both classes. He begins at the beginning - dissects the game, shows each part to the learner separately and gives full explanations; then he advances a little, pointing out and illustrating the more obvious features of the game; and, finally, he goes on to the deeper intricacies which are only to be understood by the advanced chess player. His book contains a history of the game, with remarks on the board, the men, the notation, the moves, the value of the men, and the value of the first move; he also gives an explanation of technical terms, the laws of the game, and various introductory games, and then proceeds to describe at length the various "openings." The work concludes with instructions for playing blindfold chess, and with an interesting series of chess studies. The work is invaluable for the learner, and interesting to the advanced player. It contains a vast amount of really valuable information, which is placed before the reader in popular style. The volume, containing nearly 500 pages, has been handsomely brought out by the publishers, and it will probably take its place as a standard work of its class ". p. viii, illustrated, 439.
