First edition. In two volumes. 8vo. Volume I: vi, 393 pp. 4 pp. of ads. Volume II: vi, 404 pp. Finely bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, with its stamp on the reverse of the f.f.e.p., in polished calf, elaborate gilt spine with five raised bands; gilt-lettered titling and date; gilt borders on both covers. Cover with gilt design of quill pen, antique crayon holder, and a ribbon. Marbled end-papers. T. E. G. (Pseudonym Geoffrey Crayon.) A small scratch shows on the rear cover of Vol. II. Bookplate of an early 1900s prominent Clevelander. On a blank preliminary in Vol. I is pasted a folded sheet which hand-written names and other notations in ink. The sheet shows tape repairs. The first page reads (as best we can read): Monsieur Henry Brevoort, Jr., Boulevard Montmarte No. 14, a Paris. What appear to be postal cancellations are at the top of the page. This envelope contains two Irving signatures: one is above the address as "W. Irving." At the bottom of the sheet is evidence that a wax seal has been removed. When the sheet is unfolded, other handwritten notations appear, one of which is the full signature: "Washington Irving." Then: "(a number 7?)---Letters" and "8 pieces. (Initials?)."
