Pine Bluff today has the largest African-American population in Arkansas. The city was marked by racial violence with a number of notorious lynchings taking place between 1880 and 1910. The Colored Industrial Institute, one of the first Catholic-supported schools for African-American children in Arkansas, opened in 1899 and closed in 1912. Pine Bluff became a destination for African-Americans before World War II. The homes and lots being offered by Monk s "join all the big mills in the Western part of the city" and boasts "eight churches, one large district school, one brick store, two paved streets through Addition…Only a few blocks from car line and the large Veneer Mill and Short Leaf Mill. This Addition has a population of some three thousand or more people. This is a strictly Colored Addition." The verso includes an "Application To Act as Buyer Agent."
