vii + 140 pages + 16 pages of advertisements for Tovey's book on "British and Foreign Spirits", frontispiece map, additional illustrated title-page, 7 b/w plates, hardback, original cloth, original binder's ticket on the rear paste-down, spine lettering and illustration faded / worn, tissue guard foxed but adjacent pages unaffected except for one slight spot, pale glue marks from an old repair visible along the gutter between the front endpapers, extremely neat and scarcely visible slight repairs to the head and tail of the spine, otherwise an extremely clean, sound, bright and tight copy in very good condition. There is an additional printed leaf entitled "Postcript" with numbered pages (iii*) & iv* in addition to pages (iii) & iv of the Preface. This Postscript leaf, dated September 1870, bemoans "the present terrible and sanguinary war" and the effects upon his numerous friends in Champagne. "Alas! the homes that I have visited in Champagne, the happiest that I have ever known, are now in grim misery, and despair. The sons of whom I spoke have perished in the battle-field. The fruitful vineyards, promising so much good return for their careful prunings and able tillage, lie crushed under the footsteps of invading armies, and the vines are stained with human blood, and murdered corpses occupy the scene of the vintagers' happy labours."
