First impression of the true first edition. Two full-page colour plates by Joseph Martin Kronheim (1810-1896): a colour frontispiece showing: 'The Queen's First Grandchild [with a new year and a new volume we give the full-length coloured picture of a child-prince - No. 241, January, 1865]', and a colour illustration full-page plate on page 192 showing a boy and girl 'bubble blowing'. Black and white title-page vignette showing: 'Princess (now Queen) Victoria. ***Profusely illustrated with black and white steel-engravings throughout. Two of the plates have been contemporaneously hand coloured in water-colour: 'Nests of white ants in Africa' [p345], and another which shows a boy putting skates on, and a girl with her mother, testing the thickness of the ice with her shoe [p354]. ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and date and double rules to spine. Black and white floral decorated and bordered bookplate to front pastedown of the 'Rev. Edward W. Lees, 1898-1929' with the motto: "Truth is my motto". Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Corners slightly rubbed and bumped. Tiny split to outer cloth to head of spine. Very small split to outer cloth to tail of spine. A single word: 'fighting' written in soft pencil to rear pastedown (can easily be erased). Spine tight. Top outer corners of 193 and 194 have been torn off. Fore-edge tear where printing process has left an extra fold of paper at the edge. Tiny tear to outer fore-edge of page 277 and tiny chip to fore-edge of page 279. No foxing. No inscriptions.
