Beschreibung
First impression of the first trade edition, published in the UK by Fulcrum Press. There was also a signed limited edition of just 50 copies. Printed by Villiers Publications Ltd, London for Fulcrum Press. ***Please note that this is an ex-library copy. ***A very good copy in brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright. The boards are clean with just some light tape residue from when the library cover was attached (now removed). No bumps or creases. Internally the book is actually near fine, except for the following library marks: tape offsetting marks to front and rear pastedowns. Library lending sheet and associated card folder and index card still present - all attached to the front free endpaper. Harlech Library stamp to the Acknowledgements page. No other visible signs of library use (please see scans). Pages very clean with no tears or creases. Spine tight. ***In a very good illustrated dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of £3.25. The dustwrapper is complete, with just some light creasing and rubbing at the edges. Significant tape offsetting residue to the flaps (please see scans). ***240mm x 155mm. 160 pages. ***Unusually, the Contents page appears at the back: Contents - "Discrete Series", "The Materials", "This in Which", "Of Being Numerous", "Of the Needle's Eye". ***'George Oppen's first book of poetry, "Discrete Series" with a preface by Ezra Pound, was published in 1934 by the Objectivist Press. He was one of the central members of the Objectivist Movement which included William Carlos Williams, Ezra Pound, and Louis Zukofsky. New Directions in conjunction with the San Francisco Review published his following books, "The Materials", 1962, "This in Which", 1965, "Of Being Numerous", 1968. These books brought him increasing critical appreciation and he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1969 for the last book. He was born in New Rochelle, New York in 1908 and has spent most of his writing life in Brooklyn but now lives in San Francisco. This is his first Collected Poems and brings together his lifetime's work plus the more recent poems.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper)] ***'George Oppen (April 24, 1908 - July 7, 1984) was an American poet, best known as one of the members of the Objectivist group of poets. He abandoned poetry in the 1930s for political activism and moved to Mexico in 1950 to avoid the attentions of the House Un-American Activities Committee. He returned to poetry--and to the United States--in 1958, and received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1969. (Wiki) ***A true first edition - the trade issue - of George Oppen's Collected Poems. This publication precedes the American first edition, which wasn't published until 1975. Although an ex-library copy, the book has obviously hardly left the shelves as it is extremely well preserved. A very uncommon book. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 7776x
