Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. Augustus John [Frontispiece illustration] (illustrator). First Edition. A twelfth impression of the true first edition, published in May 1957. As soon as the book was first published in November 1952, it was hugely successful and was rapidly reprinted - and reprinted another nine times in the 1950s before this twelfth impression. Illustrated with a black and white photographic frontispiece portrait of Dylan Thomas by Augustus John to the fore. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards with copper titles to the spine. The titles are still nice and bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine and top corners slightly creased. Top edge of page block stained dark red by the publisher, unfaded but slightly marked. Page block edges clean with no foxing. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also very good with a contemporaneous gift inscription in ink to the front free endpaper. No other annotations. Interior pages clean without any foxing. No creases or tears. Spine tight with no reading lean or spine creases. ***In a very good grey, red-printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, but has a publisher's 16/- net repricing label over the original publisher's price (which was 12s. 6d. net). The top corner of the front flap is clipped. The dustwrapper is virtually complete, with just some very small areas of loss at the head of the spine. The edges of the dustwrapper are slightly creased, nicked and rubbed, but there are no chips or tears. The back panel of the dustwrapper is slightly marked and darkened [being a white background]. The spine of the dustwrapper is quite darkened, with a small stain, and the red titles have faded. The red titles on the front panel are still bright. Dustwrapper foldover flaps clean and uncreased. ***222mm x144mm. 178 pages. ***'Mr. Dylan Thomas is one of the most widely discussed poets of his generation, and the place of his work in the field of modern poetry is assured. This volume gathers together all his published poems, including those from books which have been out of print for some while, that is to say from "Eighteen Poems" (1936), "The Map of Love" (1939), which contained sixteen poems as well as seven stories, and "Deaths and Entrances" (1946), which was among the few modern writings included in the Festival of Britain great books exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum. In addition, the present volume includes ten new poems which have not hitherto appeared in book form, and the author has written a Prologue in Verse----' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper from an earlier impression of the book) ***A later twelfth impression of the true first edition, complete in its original thin and fragile twelfth impression dustwrapper. Finding copies of "Collected Poems" in well-preserved original dustwrappers is becoming increasingly difficult as they were printed on very thin paper, and are prone to edge wear, creasing, chips and the light-grey colour is prone to fading. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8376x

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. Second impression of the first edition thus (of the definitive edition based on a close study of the MS. sources in the British Library). Nineteen-page introduction by Cecil Day Lewis. Long memoir in appendix to rear by Edmund Blunden. ***Near fine in mustard-yellow cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on a red gilt-bordered oval to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. Corners sharp. No tears to the cloth. Light vertical reading crease to the spine. Internally also near fine with a neat contemporary owner's name and date to the top of the front free endpaper. No creases or tears. Pages clean with no annotations and no foxing. Spine tight. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed price of 21s net. The dustwrapper is largely complete, but there is some small loss at the top and tail of the spine and the top corner of the front panel. Edges of dustwrapper slightly creased and rubbed. There is some rubbing and small nicks to the extremities, mainly to the top edge of the back panel. There is a small light splash mark to the front panel near the spine. The red title on the spine of the dustwrapper are only slightly faded. Dustwrapper bright. ***224mm x144mm. x prelim-pages plus 191 pages including appendices - four facsimile handwritten drafts, including final draft of 'Anthem for Doomed Youth' and index of first lines to rear. ***Wilfred Owen's death in the First World War was an irreparable loss to English poetry. His war poems have kept their originality and force through the last forty years: the best of them were unequalled by any of that remarkable band of fellow-poets who fought on the Western Front, and they promised still greater things to come. ***This definitive edition of Owen's poetry, which is based on a close study of the MS. sources in the British Museum and elsewhere, contains a selection of the poet's juvenilia and several other unpublished poems, as well as all those which have appeared in the previous editions edited by Siegfried Sassoon and Edmund Blunden. The editor supplies an "apparatus criticus", giving variants made by Owen himself, and indicating where his text differs from that of the previous editors. He has also contributed a long Introduction, in which he discusses Owen's poetry and early life, making use of the poet's unpublished letters to his family. Edmund Blunden's Memoir, dealing with the war period, is reprinted as an appendix, and there are reproductions of four drafts of 'Anthem for Doomed Youth.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***Second impression of the first edition thus (of the definitive edition, based on a close study of the MS. sources in the British Library) complete in its original dustwrapper in very nice presentable condition. Of interest to literary academics and collectors of the poetry of Wilfred Owen and of First World War literature and poetry titles. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8345z

The book was originally published in March 1935. ***Very good in buff-coloured cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine, and a small gilt Hogarth Press monogram to the front board. Edges of boards slightly rubbed. The boards are clean with the spine just slightly browned. Internally very good with no inscriptions. Light offsetting to the front and back endpapers. Pages clean. No creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a very good plain cream printed dustwrapper. No major chips or tears. Very small loss to the head and tail of the spine and corners of the dustwrapper. Surface scuff, with one-inch closed tear and associated creasing to the bottom edge of the front panel of the dustwrapper. Spine of dustwrapper slightly darkened. Front and rear panels of dustwrapper bright and clean. ***218mm x 142mm. 156 pages. ***'Cecil Day-Lewis (or Day Lewis) CBE (27 April 1904 - 22 May 1972), often written as C. Day-Lewis, was an Irish-born, British poet and Poet Laureate from 1968 until his death in 1972. In Oxford, Day-Lewis became part of the circle gathered around W. H. Auden and helped him to edit Oxford Poetry 1927. During World War II, Day-Lewis worked as a publications editor in the Ministry of Information for the UK government, and also served in the Musbury branch of the British Home Guard. During the Second World War his work was now no longer so influenced by Auden and he was developing a more traditional style of lyricism. Some critics believe that he reached his full stature as a poet in "Word Over All" (1943), when he finally distanced himself from Auden. After the war he joined the publisher Chatto & Windus as a director and senior editor. In 1946, Day-Lewis was a lecturer at Cambridge University, publishing his lectures in "The Poetic Image" (1947). Day-Lewis was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by George VI in his 1950 Birthday Honours. He later taught poetry at Oxford, where he was Professor of Poetry from 1951 to 1956. During 1962-1963, he was the Norton Professor at Harvard University. Day-Lewis was appointed Poet Laureate in 1968, in succession to John Masefield.' [Wiki] ***'Mr. Day Lewis's poetry has won a high reputation with such rapidity that all the works included in this volume are now out of print in their original form. His first book, "Transitional Poem", was published by the Hogarth Press in 1931; "From Feathers to Iron" followed in 1931, and "The Magnetic Mountain" in 1933. [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***A third impression of the true first edition, in its original dustwrapper. It is uncommon to find early impressions in the original dustwrappers now. The first impression, printed in March 1935, consisted of only 620 copies [Woolmer 363] so the third impression may have had a similarly small print run. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 6149x

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. Fifth impression of the true first edition, published in November 1942. The book was first published in April 1936, and reprinted in September 1937, September 1939, and May 1941 before this printing. ***Near fine in dark blue cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The cloth covering over the boards is clean and unmarked and still a beautiful deep blue, even on the spine. The top edge of the page block is stained pink by the publisher to match the dustwrapper - the red stain is still dark and also clean of marks. No bumping to the boards. Corners sharp. No creasing. Page block edges clean. Spine tight. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions. None of the usual off-setting to the endpapers, and no internal foxing. Pages clean. No creases or tears. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, which retains the original publisher's printed price of 8s. 6d. net. The dustwrapper is complete, with just minimal rubbing and creasing, but with virtually no loss - just a small nick at the top of the front panel near the spine. There is a small closed tear to the top edge of the front panel with some light associated creasing. The spine of the dustwrapper is just very slightly faded. Interestingly, the dustwrapper flaps are much smaller than is usually found with this title, indicating the economies that were being made during the Second World War. ***191 pages. 225mm x 145mm. ***'This volume contains all Mr. Eliot's poetry that he wishes to preserve, with the exception of "Murder in the Cathedral". It includes "Sweeney Agonistes" and the choruses from "The Rock" as well as all the poems in "Poems 1909-1925.'" (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A fifth impression of the true first edition, published during the height of the Second World War, in beautiful collectable condition. Although not a scarce book as such, finding copies in such near fine condition in their original wartime dustwrappers is almost impossible now. A collector's copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8584
