Beschreibung
Second impression of the true first edition, published in May 1963, the same month as the first impression. Dustwrapper wraparound design from a painting by Tom Adams. ***Near fine in orange-brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still nice and bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. Boards clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just very slightly creased. Top of page block stained red by the publisher - slightly faded and marked. None of the usual foxing to the page block edges. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean and bright. No internal foxing. No tears or creases. Spine tight with no reading lean. ***In a near fine colour-illustrated dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's price of 18s net. The dustwrapper is complete with no loss and hardly any wear. Extremities of dustwrapper just slightly rubbed. Very slight loss at the top edge of the spine and corner tips. Some light marks and a small stain to the back panel which is white. No fading to the spine. Dustwrapper bright. ***195 mm x132 mm. 283 pages. ***'As stark as a police report, this novel opens with the confession of a young suburban clerk who has kidnapped an art student from outside her home in Hampstead. In his own colourless, yet curiously expressive words, Frederick Clegg tells how he held her prisoner in a remote house in the country, which he had bought for the purpose with money won in the football pools. Leaving nothing to chance, he is as meticulous over the details of his complicated plan as he is with the layout of his butterfly collection. The girl, thoughtful, yet impetuous and eager for life, and to him a creature from a different world, surreptitiously records Clegg's feelings of inferiority and his pathetic attempts to make her understand him. Desperately she tries to persuade him to release her. A remarkable feat of imagination, The Collector is a novel of suspense and disquieting perception whose cumulative effect is all too memorable.' [Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper] ***A near fine copy of the second impression of the true first edition of John Fowles' first novel, complete in the original dustwrapper, with the attractive wraparound painting by Tom Adams. Early impressions of this book in such collectable condition are very hard to find now. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8404
