FIRST EDITION. Slender 8vo. (21 cm.) Decorative devices on the title page. Tan lapping wrappers decorated in red and black with a vignette of a world globe and a tower (?) on the front wrapper. Born February 9, 1899, in Traverse City, Michigan, Max Carlton Miller was an American journalist and writer. He attended high school in Everett, Washington, and also attended the University of Washington 1919-1923, where he was some time editor of the UNIVERSITY DAILY. He was a member of Sigma Delta Chi and Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Miller served in the U.S. Navy, 1917-1918; U.S. Naval Reserve, active duty, 1942-45 and 1950-53, where he became Commander. Miller died December 27, 1967, in La Jolla, CA. As a journalist, Miller worked for various newspapers 1923-1932, including the SEATTLE STAR, MELBOURNE HERALD (Australia), and SAN DIEGO SUN. He left journalism to become a full-time writer in 1932. Miller wrote numerous books, both fiction and non-fiction, and is best known for I COVER THE WATERFRONT (American Mercury, 1938), which served as the inspiration for two movies, one of which, under the same name, starred Claudette Colbert (1933), as well as a ballad. I COVER THE WATERFRONT is based on Miller's experience as a waterfront reporter for the SAN DIEGO SUN during the later 1920s and early 1930s. Several of his books, including non-fiction works, have their settings in Southern California, including one set in La Jolla (THE TOWN WITH THE FUNNY NAME), where he died. Many think his HE WENT AWAY FOR A WHILE (Dutton, 1933) was his first book; but C+ A COLLEGE COMMENTARY is actually his first work and was written while he was a student at the University of Washington. It is a campus satire, which does not identify the college as the University of Washington, but his experience there must lie just beneath the surface of this interesting little book. Lapping wrappers chipped, especially at top and bottom of spine and along the bottom edge, three small abraded areas on rear wrapper, wrappers very lightly soiled, else very good to near fine/ n/a.
