Black lettering against deep red cloth. The front hinge is a little fragile at the pastedown, but otherwise the book is tight and the pages are generally clean with no inscriptions; in a very good example of an exceptionally rare dustwrapper, that has a closed tear to the front panel and a few nicks and chips but is otherwise delightfully well preserved, as shown in the images. Housed in a custom made clamshell box, included in sale. This is the first English edition - as the contents were originally published in the United States under the title 'Their Mutual Child' - and all issue points corroborate with McIlvaine A23b. However, it should be noted (regarding the dust wrapper) that despite the match with the McIlvaine entry this is possibly an early state (rather than the first issue) wrapper. This is one of the problem Wodehouses, and divides opinion, and it seems the McIlvaine entry regarding the dust wrapper is open to some debate; the true first most likely had a red framed back panel, rather than green. I understand that there are perhaps one or two of such wrappers surviving, held in private collections. So the chances of obtaining the alleged true first are exceedingly slim.
