This landmark Act, formally know as the Combinations in Restraint of Trade Act, 1889 (or simply, the Competition Act, 1889) was the first antitrust statute in the western world - one year ahead of the American Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890. The legislation prohibited price-fixing and aimed to control the growth of monopolies within business sectors related to transportation, production, manufacturing, supplying, storing, or other dealings with commercial commodities. The intent of the legislation was to encourage competition, increase economic efficiency, and enhance access to world markets. Legal terminology has changed since the passing of this Act, with the meaning of combination activity being modified over time to denote the maneuvers of cartels, monopolies, antitrust agreement, and competition law.
