Beschreibung
A true first edition, published posthumously in 1937, in the original dustwrapper. With a four-page Biographical Note on his father Edward Garnett by David Garnett, and a 32 page Introductory Essay entitled "Conrad's Place in English Literature" at the beginning of the book. ***Near fine in maroon cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine, and a gilt device on the front board. The gilt remains quite bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked, but there is some uneven sun-fading to the top edges of the front and back boards. No bumps or creases to the boards. No tears to the cloth. Corners sharp. Top of page block stained black by the publisher. Page block edges slightly nice and clean without any foxing. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions or annotations. Pages beautifully clean, without any of the usual foxing. No creases or tears. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a very good plain printed dustwrapper, priced by the publisher at 7s. 6d. net on the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete, with hardly any loss - just some very small areas of loss at the top edge of the back panel and bottom foldover tip between the back panel and flap. Very slight rubbing at the edges, with just some very small creases. No significant creasing, chips or tears - just a vertical crease to the fore edge of the front flap. The spine of the dustwrapper is slightly darkened and the lettering on the spine is slightly faded. ***218 pages. 215mm x 145mm. ***'This book contains two important contributions to the appreciation of Conrad's novels - one by Conrad himself, a series of essays not previously collected in one volume; and a newly written study by the late Edward Garnett, who was, in the publishing sense, Conrad's discoverer. David Garnett has written a Biographical Note on his father, Edward Garnett, for inclusion in this his last work.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***'Edward William Garnett (5 Jan 1868 - 19 Feb 1937) was an English writer, critic and literary editor, who was instrumental in the publication of D. H. Lawrence's "Sons and Lovers". He worked as an editor and reader for the London publishing houses of T. Fisher Unwin, Gerald Duckworth and Co., and then Jonathan Cape. He brought together in 1898 Joseph Conrad, a Fisher Unwin author, to whom he acted as a mentor as well as a friend, and Ford Madox Ford; they collaborated in the first few years of the twentieth century. Garnett also befriended D. H. Lawrence, and for a time influenced him in the direction of realist fiction.' (Wiki) ***A true first edition, in very nice clean condition, scarce to find in its original complete dustwrapper. Of interest to collectors of antiquarian and first edition Joseph Conrad titles. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 8543
