Beschreibung
8vo. (20 cm.) 105p. Illustrated from original sketches [4 black and white] and photographic views [9 black and white]. Laid in is a 7.25 x 10.5 tri-fold grey pre-publication announcement brochure printed in blue with a black and white photo of the author at the top of the middle panel and a short biographical sketch beneath the photo. Maroon cloth with black letters on the front cover and with a vignette in gilt and black on the front cover of a full moon shining over an urban landscape. Some wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, top and bottom of spine just showing signs of wanting to fray, cover vignette has lost some of its gilt, covers clean, all illustrations in fine condition, else very good to near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. According to the laid in brochure, "This handsome edition of Country and River Side (sic) Poems is limited to five hundred copies. Three hundred of the edition have been ordered, and the balance will be forwarded in the rotation corresponding to the orders." The book itself does not show any limitation. Per the biographical sketch in the brochure, Horace Dumont Herr was a native of Dublin, Indiana, and was one of the pioneer preachers in the State of Kansas. Among his pastorates in that state are numbered Lecompton of the early days, Abilene, Chapman, McPherson, Fredonia, and Kansas City. Kansas. In 1907 he was called to the First Congregational Church of Muscatine, Iowas, and later served the Congregational Church of Ames, Iowa. When this brochure was produced he was pastor of the Congregational Church of Humboldt, Iowa, and one of the leading men of the denomination in that state. This is a relatively rare volume as OCLC shows only 7 holding libraries. Herr was also the author of THE TENTERS, OR, MOUNTAIN-SIDE STORIES TOLD IN VERSE (1906?) and THE CARAVANS (1923).
